Checking out

When checking out material you have to present a valid library card. Sipoo municipal library forms together with 11 other Uusimaa municipal libraries the Helle-libraries. The same library card works for all other Helle-libraries. You are responsible for all materials that have been checked out to your card.

Due dates vary depending on the material in question and demand. Maximum number of items checked out at one time is 100. Certain restrictions apply to AV-material. We follow age ratings for movies.

If you are not allowed to check out items from one of the Helle-libraries, you cannot check out items from the other libraries.

Returning

Material you have checked out should be returned at the latest by closing on the due date. Outside library open hours you can return material to the library's return chute and it will be registered as returned next day library is open.

The main library's and Söderkulla library's return chutes are by the front entrance.

Material you have checked out from another Helle-library may be returned to another Helle-library. Interlibrary loans should be returned to the library you have checked it out from.

Renewals

You may renew your checked out items a maximum of 6 times, as long as there are no active holds on them.

You can renew your checked out items through the library web site, in the library or by telephone.

You can acquire your library card and the personal PIN code from the nearest library. The library will provide you with a card for borrowing materials in your municipality or from the library union operating in your municipality.

When collecting the library card, bring an identification, passport or, in exceptional circumstances, another identification card provided by the authorities. You cannot obtain a library card without a personal visit to the library. A child needs an application filled by his/her guardian for his/her library card.

You can apply for a library card for yourself or a child under 15 in My services. Choose "Leisure time and youth" and "Library card application". You can choose if you want to pick up your library card from the main library in Nikkilä or Söderkulla library. You will get a message in My services when the card is ready.

Young adults between the ages of 16 and 18 can apply for a library card in the library. Remember to have an identity card, eg. Kela-card, with you!

To whom and on what terms

You can visit the library freely and use materials like books, magazines and digital materials, e-magazines and databases. For checking out material you need a library card. The library card's number together with your PIN works as an identifier when using digital services.

Libraries are meeting places and culture centres open to everyone. Libraries offer magazines, books, music, films and other materials for your use either on site or to be borrowed and taken home. Libraries also offer room for studying, hobbies and passing time. In addition, guidance, assistance, events and exhibitions are organised. The libraries’ national online services at the Kirjastot.fi website are open for everyone, as well as the Finna.fi service of the National Library of Finland. Your own library also provides you with titles from the Multilingual Library and the library for the visually impaired, Celia. There is also a web-based library of material in signed languages, the Sign Language Library.
